Horry County PRIDE

-- George Edwards

Franklin's Join or Die snake woodcut

Benjamin Franklin's woodcut from May 9, 1754.
Newspaper Serial and Government Publications Division,
Library of Congress.

This had nothing to do with independence from Britain. It was a plea for unity in defending the colonies during the French and Indian War. It played off a common superstition of the time: a snake that had been cut into pieces could come back to life if you joined the sections together before sunset.

We, current residents, HOAs and Horry County districts find ourselves in a situation similar to the dismembered colonies represented in the woodcut above. If we don’t band together, major developments will continue to be approved that do not contribute their proportionate share of the public infrastructure they require. As we have for decades, we will have to continue with over-burdened roads, schools, police and fire facilities or pony up increased taxes that the new developments should have taken care of as Horry County did at its inception.

Groups of Horry County citizens have united to successfully solve problems in their immediate communities. The continued efforts of dedicated individuals and communities will still be required, but alone they are inadequate to solve county-wide problems that seriously impact us all. We need to unite.

Horry County PRIDE provides an opportunity to unite. The more citizens and HOAs that band together in it, the greater power this group will have. Horry County PRIDE’s stated purposes are to lobby for approval of only those major developments in areas where there are adequate public facilities or the developers contribute their proportionate share.

Having known them and having served alongside them in such as the Envision 2025 Horry County Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee, I can vouch for the hard-working Horry County PRIDE founders, Pam Creech and Julie Harbin, as being in total accord with and sincerely dedicated to achieve the Horry County PRIDE goals. – George Edwards

There is a gigantic proposed development akin to Carolina Forest in size, Carolina Station, seeking Horry County government approval with a proposed development plan that would shield it from any future county legislation such as the adequate public facilities ordinance recommended in the Envision 2025 comprehensive plan. We have seen the shortcomings, such as the lack of road interconnectivity in Carolina Forest. An urgent priority of Horry County PRIDE lobbying efforts should be to ensure that this development plan accords with Horry County PRIDE objectives.
